doorhandles, sisters, orgies, awards, lecherous lecturers, separated friends ... not dead yet!

Episode One: Door Handle

Edina can’t make her mind up about how to redesign the kitchen and Saffron is getting frustrated. Saffron also finds herself explaining the importance of a breast exam and Pap smear to Patsy. Edina and Patsy fly to New York in attempt to accomplish one thing; to obtain a door handle for the kitchen. Edina is encouraged by Patsy to get her bellybutton pierced and of course it gets infected. When they arrive home not only has Saffron totally redesigned the kitchen but Edina has totally forgotten that it was Saffron’s birthday.

Episode Two: Happy New Year

Edina and Patsy’s New Years Clubbing experience is delayed by the arrival of Jackie, Patsy’s sister, who is ‘fabulous on an international scale’ according to Patsy. When Jackie arrives she explains that she is too tired to go clubbing because she is after all 72. A shocked Patsy is forced to consider how old she really is. The novelty of Jackie’s visit soon wears off when she tells Patsy about her refuge for stray animals. Patsy promptly kicks her out, sending her on her way with a heroin needle and instructions to go out with a bang!

Episode Three: Sex

Saffron and her friends are planning a video presentation for her school assignment on genetics. Edina decides she needs a walk-in wardrobe and wants to expand into Serge’s unused room. While having a look around his room she discovers a copy of Razzle; a porn magazine. This reminds Edina how long it has been since she has had sex. While Saffron is giving her presentation at school, Edina and Patsy hire some men for an orgy; Patsy spices things up by showing a tape of an orgy she and Edina has once been in. Somehow the tapes are switched and Edina and Patsy rush to Saffron’s school in attempt to switch the tapes and continue the orgy but they are too late.

Episode Four: Jealous

Edina is preparing frantically for the PR Person of The Month Lunch. Will Self has written her acceptance speech, she has chosen the judges and sponsored the award. Meanwhile, Saffron’s married lecturer is getting fresh with her. Edina loses her speech at the Campaign Launch and delivers a speech that lands her the Prozac Campaign. Edina arrives home triumphant about her new endeavour, to find out that Saffron’s lecturer is giving her troubles, “prompting her to commit one act of true maternal concern she exhibits in the whole series.” (Wenzel Jones, the Advocate)

Episode Five: Fear

Saffron has moved into the Halls of Residence again and Edina is completely lost, even though Saffron has labeled everything in the house for her. Patsy’s magazine has folded, but Magda has invited Patsy to work with her in New York for HQ Magazine. She accepts though change frightens her. Lulu wants to cancel her representation contract with Edina but is persuaded to give her another month when Edina tells Lulu of her new partnership with PRM, a huge publicity firm in America. Saffron moves back home. Edina and Patsy have a fight and they go their separate ways, Patsy to New York and Edina to a spiritual retreat.

Episode Six: The End

Everyone is separated for the first time ever. Gran spends most of her time watching television. Edina is bored at the spiritual retreat. Patsy isn’t having much fun in New York and the only recognition she gets in from the drag queens she encounters on the streets of Manhattan. She tries to get up to her old tricks of sleeping her way into a higher position at the magazine by making a pass  at HQ’s wealthy publisher, but is beaten to it by Marshall’s old girlfriend Bo. Proving that Edina and Patsy are inseparable, Edina flies to New York to pick up Patsy and by the end of the episode everyone is back together again. Saffron moves home, but there are conditions. The post-credits scene is 25 years from now and Edina and Patsy are even more reliant on Saffron, but it shows that they can’t live without each other.

Black Books go here ... as well.

Comments:
This was the episode that they didn't show last season because of Columbine, and though I was angry at the networks at the time I have to say that I think it was the right decision. It's a pretty good episode, and has some good one-liners from Xander, but in that atmosphere it's hard not to think of it as a little glib and even exploitative.

Grade (on a scale of 10): 6
